Opening Day

Today was the Opening Day of pheasant season in Kansas. It's a big deal around these parts, at least for some people. We have a lot of visitors in the area, restaurants and hotels run specials and have "welcome hunters" signs out, and you see crowds of guys wearing orange peppering the fields as you drive by.

Historically, southwest kansas has been an excellent place for pheasant hunting drawing lots of hunters from all over the place, but the "bird numbers" have been down the past few years due, in large part, to the drought.

Marc hasn't ever really made too big of a deal about Opening Day because he can hunt any day, with less crowds and less hype.

But some years he and some friends will go out and that's what happened today. Michael came down from Lakin and they joined up with Marc's friend Travis and Travis's 3rd grade son and dad.

Cole and I joined them for breakfast and then hung out at the house with the girls until the guys returned with their kill, around lunch time.

They reported that the birds were better than last year but still not quite back to where they had been in the past. Still, they were able to come away with 3 birds!

And, in true Cole fashion, he wasn't afraid of the dead birds at all. He got right in there and touched them without question. Maybe he recognized them from his bedroom wall?!?

These boys had matching hats...hunter orange

Hanging out while the boys hunted...

A fun morning with friends!

  1. Love the pictures! I'd be hard pressed here to find a handful of people who knew it was pheasant season, much less opening day! I don't hang out with "those kind of people". Wish I did!

I'm glad Marc's schedule allowed for a hunting spree with the fellas. That's a good looking bird, Marc got. Pheasant nuggets on the menu soon?

  2. Pheasant nuggets still remain one of my favorites. More reasons to come and visit! (Not that I only come for the food, promise).
